starting apps in another window

Sorry if this has been asked before. It probably has but I couldn't 
find the relevant documentation in the manual.

1. Is it possible to start a programm manually in a new window 
*without switching to that window*? ([Ctrl][A]+[:] screen <app>) 
starts <app> in a new window but switches to this new window, too)

2. Is it possible to start a command/app in an already created window? 
(like start mutt in window #2 where there is nothing yet except the 
shell waiting for input)
