well, the main problem with this is that the patches are drifting.. They no longer
patch cleanly on 4.02, and even if they *did* have some shortcomings in them,
its much better IMO to resync them, note the problems as caveats, and 
go on from there.

As it is, any user who wants to use the functionality has to twiddle the patch 
to make it work.

Could the patch - given its shortcomings - possibly be applied in 4.03? 
I'd love to, but I don't have commit access.
