Config tool and .crsite

Two items:

1) I'm totally confused about what I need to run the config tool. I find
almost any combination of wx with GTK and Python and none of them are
the versions that work. If someone knows a version that works, please
send me a link to the down load page for them.

2) what is the format of the .crsite file? It seems to be created by the
config tool, but if I can't get that to work or doesn't want to use
that, then how does one build it?
