Check /var/log/Xorg.0.log and/or the /var/log/gdm or kdm or xdm logs to
see why it's exiting.

You need to have the $DISPLAY variable pointing at something that can
accept an X11 client.  Null is probably not an option.

Something went wrong with your X11 install.  It would appear to be an X
issue, not a chromium one.
