There are two different vertex programs that can be used for the water
mesh (in data/shader/water): water.cgvp and ocean.cgvp. The second one has
bigger waves but generates a visual problem in the LOD management (this
problem may have its source in the C++ code of the watermesh, in
plugins/mesh/watermesh/object).

In parallel, there is also the water shader that Frank made for YoFrankie
(data/shader/reflect/water_plane.xml), which already looks very good (see
the attached screenshot of csisland) and uses the shader weaver (but don't
have a vertex program since it is for flat surfaces).

A simple solution may be to convert water.cgvp into a shader snippet to be
combined in the weaver with the shader from Frank. This way the water mesh
would look good while providing bigger waves.

There are other ideas of visual effects that can be made around the water,
they are listed on the GSOC ideas page (eg shorelines and underwater
effects). And generally speaking, you can have a look at the csisland demo
to search for ideas of visual effects that can improve the demo. See also
