 The VFS working directory (and the “directory stack”) is actually thread-
 local, so multiple directories changing the working directory is actually
 safe.

 Of course, semantics will get tricky when paths are passed across threads
 (or stored for later handling); in these cases, only absolute paths
 provide are really reliable.
