Hi Gerald,

 I'm pleased to tell you that it went very well, and I think people
were interested in the software, and also entertained by the movie.
Some people actually came up to me afterwards to ask if they could
download the movie, and maybe show it to their students.

 I started the session with two powerpoint slides, and then I played
the movie until for around 23 minutes, and then paused it after you
said: He's a winner! I then started demonstrating Fluidiom by first
showing some of the cool creatures, and then making one of my own. If
there was any low point in the presentation, it was that my creature
was a bit of a dog. You can see for it yourself, it's called Wings
(based on what it looked like when I put it down in the environment).
However, my abominable creation did serve to illustrate one point:
whether a creature has limbs or not, it will always learn locomotion,
because at the end of the session it had managed a score of 1.5, so it
did manage some forward motion. The reason I had difficulty creating a
creature on the fly was that I hadn't prepared any narrative while
building a creature, other than pointing out what the building blocks
are and how you can employ them, so I felt a bit rushed. I therefore
haphazardly threw together some tetrahedrons, hoping it would end up
like a creature with four legs (if you look at my more recent
creations, you can see that I had sort of got the hang of that in
'practice sessions'), but unfortunately it did not.

 After I had finished building the creature I invited the audience to
ask some intial questions, but it turned out they wanted to ask more
than merely some initial questions. I think I was able to answer most
of them satisfactorily, even though now, four hours later, I really
have to think what it was they asked... They asked about the global
cycle, about whether structure could mutate, and they came up with
some references to related work that I didn't know of. Also, of
course, they wanted to know about how your work differs from other
approaches, and what exactly is your vision regarding the hybrid
fitness function and the applicability of this research.

 Then, after a short coffee break, I resumed the movie on another
Apple laptop that Martijn Schut had brought along, while Hans's laptop
was evolving my creature. I think the audience enjoyed the second part
of the movie - at least I thought it was the best part - and the
closing credits were met by a warm round of applause.

 All in all, a very successful event, and let's hope we get to see
some new Fluidiom creators pretty soon. Oh, I almost forgot, during
lunch one of the people from the workshop who was doing a piece for a
report of the workshop, and so I had to give an account of my work,
your work, and of what Almende is all about. But that was Ok - you
know my natural tendency towards loquaciousness, and how I always like
to talk to journalists.
