ahh.. so you mean take one interval away from an octahedron, and bring
the interval's two joints together into one.  very good!

the proximity knotter is a "joint visitor" object which does a large
number (N*N) of distance calculations (although i avoid square root,
and use "quadrance" instead).  it must calculate the distances from
every joint to every other joint.  it's not really so slow, unless N
gets large.

connecting faces might be nice, but you have to imagine all the things
that can and will go wrong.  it's very nice to avoid structures that
overlap.  i still find the idea of merging entire tetrahedrons to be
quite charming.

but actually what i would love to accomplish more than anything else
is to drop all of these tetrahedrons and octahedrons and be able to do
everything in terms of tensegrities.  i believe that tensegrity
deserves a great deal more attention than it has gotten and that much
can be learned from it that has not yet been thought about.  do you
agree?  my problem is to come up with tensegrity growth mutations, so
if you're interested in thinking about that, it would be exciting.
