Okay, so each bar is in state, and the state is affected by the gene
it runs into.  Could we borrow from the original Darwin@Home now, and
the organism as a whole could get a certain amount of "energy" related
to how far it traveled in the last period.  That energy is then usable
by the bars.  For a bar in the "grow fast" state, it is efficient in
using that energy to grow fast.  In a "grow slowly" state, the bar can
only grow a little with a given amount of energy.  The tensegrity gets
energy according to how quickly it covers ground, so only with so much
energy would a "grow another bar" state yield the result.  So in oder
to grow another bar, two adjacent bars must be in the right state, and
the tensegrity as a whole must be gathering enough energy....?

Just a thought.
