IMatch Categories Q?

This question is for those of you that do nature photography, 
specifically animals:

I have been testing IMatch for the past few days. IMatch seems to be 
a category-based system. That is, you build categories that suit 
your photo needs, and then you add categories to your photos.

I do a lot of nature photography, especially birds. 

I have set up a main category called Birds, with sub-categories for 
each type of bird underneath. If there is more than one type of bird 
(for example ducks), then I create another set of categories 
underneath:

Birds 
	Bittern, American 
	Blackbirds, Red-Winged 
	Bluebirds, Eastern 
	Cardinals, Northern 
	Catbird, Gray 
	Chickadees, Carolina 
	Cuckoo, Yellow-Billed 
	Doves, Mourning 
	Ducks 
		American Black Duck 
		Green-Winged Teal 
		Hooded Merganser 
		Mallard 
		Northern Pintail 
		Wood Duck 
	... 
	... 
	... 


My question is what to do with the gender of birds. The gender of 
many birds can be told by their plumage. For example, the male 
Northern Cardinal is bright red, whereas the female is mostly light 
brown.

How do you guys handle gender? 

I can see two solutions at this time: 

(1) Add another category for the gender, such as: 

Sex 
Male 
Female 


But then I run into problems if the photo has a male of one species 
and a female of another. For example, a Male Mallard and Female 
Northern Pintail. Because then the Male and Female categories would 
both be checked, and it might like there is a male and female 
Mallard or a male and female Pintail.

(2) Add a subcategory for each bird where the gender can be told 
apart. For example, that would turn the above categories into:

Birds 
	Bittern, American 
	Blackbirds, Red-Winged 
		Male 
		Female 
	Bluebirds, Eastern 
		Male 
		Female 
	Cardinals, Northern 
		Male 
		Female 
	Catbird, Gray 
	Chickadees, Carolina 
	Cuckoo, Yellow-Billed 
	Doves, Mourning 
	Ducks 
		American Black Duck 
			Male 
			Female 
		Green-Winged Teal 
			Male 
			Female 
		Hooded Merganser 
			Male 
			Female 
		Mallard 
			Male 
			Female 
		Northern Pintail 
			Male 
			Female 
		Wood Duck 
			Male 
			Female 
	... 
	... 
	... 

As you can see, this creates a LOT more categories. 

I also shoot dragonflies which has the same gender issue. 

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
