I've been trying to settle on a program to catalog my images. I have been unsatisfied with all the other viewing/cataloging programs I have tried. I love what Imatch can do, but I am rapidly approaching the end of my evaluation, and have run into a major problem. My problem is that I want other family members to be able to use/view/access the image files. They are struggling with the Imatch interface, for some of them, I just don't think they will get through it. They don't really use it enough or want to invest the time in the learning curve. The options, menus, and UI of Imatch have been frustrating them. The upfront ease of use of Picasa suits what they need to do. But the lack of category organization hampers my organizing needs. What I am trying to work out is a way to use picasa as a "skin" over the imatch functionality. I was trying to find a way to have Imatch automatically export the categort information into the IPTC fields of the images. This would at least allow Picasa to read the categories as "keywords", and allow the less techy family members to do simple searches/viewing/selection of images. And if Picasa populates the IPTC info, this would allow me to import any images that other family members have tagged via picasa/IPTC into the imatch database (selecting the option to convert the IPTC keywords to categories.) SO far, I have had no luck getting my category info written into the images IPTC fields via Imatch, although it sure seems like it should be possible. Yahoo!
