Indeed. Multiple unrelated IDATs with other chunks between them,
multiple palettes, ... Other than the ability to use a stock libpng
to decode the first image, it's difficult to see any benefit to this
approach. libpng will barf as soon as it encounters a chunk other
than IEND, tEXt/zTXt/iTXt or tIME after the IDATs, and I can't imagine
a hack like this ever becoming an approved part of the spec (or even
an extension to it). Sounds a lot like what KDE/Qt did a few years
back, in fact.

I think the ultimate argument was the lack of an experienced (Mozilla)
maintainer to take care of it; other issues were mentioned, but they
were largely refuted, and Mozilla drivers actually (conditionally)
reversed the removal at one point--whereupon the lack of a maintainer
became the final sticking point.(*)

But perhaps Stuart would care to present his viewpoint on either issue?

(*) Nevertheless, work on a clean and trimmed-down MNG extension (.xpi)
has continued; Glenn can provide pointers, I suspect.
