Shared layers, multiple canvases, and printing

All,

I'm a recent convert to OG and have been very happy, but I'm struggling to find a way to accomplish something without having to draw everything twice.

I'm working on a very large drawing (canvas size 36" x 60"). It has many interconnected components so the ability to view it all on a single printed page is important. The large print helps give a graphical sense of the "flows" from one component to another. This is working great.

Now I need to add a lot of detail to each of the components. To present and review this information I'd really like to print each component on a single (say US Letter-sized) page, but I'd like to enter that detailed information only once. I don't want to recreate each component on a separate canvas because then I'd have to maintain it in two places.

Is there a way that I can use layers/canvas/... to have a single object that sometimes is printed on the large page with many other objects, but other times is printed by itself on a suitably-sized page?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

-Mike
