I asked my wife "what colour is that" and she said, approximately, "blue,
sort of grey round there, yellow" (it was an image of some food).  I then
asked "what greyscale is that" and she said, "what do you mean, grey sch?"

There are 14 uses of greyscale in 1.2 (using the American spelling), not
one of them attempts to define what it means.

Ok, so it's not a human word, but it can be an ISO word.  However I don't
think it is; there's no such thing as a "greyscale" (or even a grayscale).
ISO uses "grey scale", but "grey" has a well understood meaning (it's a
colourless colour) and so does "scale" (it's a set of monotonically
increasing values).  The PNG spec lacks the all important space and it uses
the word "greyscale" in a context where it would otherwise be using the
word "grey".

Hum.  Maybe I'll propose a spec revision.  I asked my wife, "What grey is
that?"  The response was, "Grey!  What ***ing grey.  Hum, I wouldn't call
it grey, maybe there is a little grey but it isn't grey, period."
