Just an idea: Define eXIF and eXIf to have the exact same syntax, but slightly different meaning: eXIf (safe-to-copy) contains metadata for some past version of the image. Some or all of the metadata may not apply to the current image, but may be of historical interest. eXIF (unsafe-to-copy) contains metadata consistent with the current image. An editor that alters a critical chunk must update eXIF to maintain that consistency, or rename it to eXIf, or drop it (the default behavior if it is unknown). Either eXIf or eXIF may appear (at most once), but not both.
