I had to ask Lauris this myself. :)

His explanation was good. Basically, anywhere line segments cross, a 
node is put and the line is 'cut'.

This is useless with filled objects, but with several intersecting line 
segments, it cuts them where they cross, making sections easy to remove 
accurately.
