just a note i as a user of debian unstable are still stuck with the old sodipodi whereas the inkscape using the same boolean operations as the actual release of sodipodi is available. additionally inkscape finally came around to make the property windows float above the document, instead of being hidden behind it. see it as a fact that you have some competition now. another thing. i dont know what the sodipodi main toolbar is about, its just a hassle to go there and select the tool i need. i dont know why but its just my impression. for now ... i as a user will switch completely to the next app that realizes a palette tool. a feature i asked lauris for, i think 2-3 years ago, and which still hasnt been accomplished yet. and btw. sodipodi may be a cool name, but let me ask you all one thing - if you say sodipodi to someone, what will the person think - will the person associate a vector editing tool with it? i guess no. so much to the reason why inkscape got so much attention. point three - they switched/wanttoswitch to c++. honestly doing large scale projects in C is shooting yourself in the foot. i am no professional programmer, but when C++ offers a class structure that doesnt need obscure hacks like gtk+ C with its gobject stuff (big mess imho, turning off lots of people with its really unelegant style of programming) this really raises the bar for the skills needed to work on a large scale project like this. of course they (will) get more programmers simply beause they try to make an effort to clean up the source code in such a way, that hacking on it gets easier and progress comes faster. to just describe my view on gtk/C. i shed out the money to buy the german version of programming gnome2.0, i have some knowledge in C but no real CS education. after reading around 100 pages i am asking myself if all this stuff is worth it, or if i should switch to C++/gtkmm or even QT, just because they have a more open - not strictly for CS student style of approach. well thats my oppinion on it, i use sodipodi since around it came out and came to live with its quirks. yet it seems to me that inkscape realized some ideas and concepts on the userinterface side that sodipodi would have profited as well from. so i either would like to see a merge of the two projects. inkscape is a much better name for users, and they seem to care about menu organization, how the property windows behave and other stuff. it's just my two cents but personally i like the inkscape approach much better. cheers markus -- there is no fork() [email protected] jabber: [email protected] ICQ: 89617808 ------------------------------------------------------- SF.Net is sponsored by: Speed Start Your Linux Apps Now.
