A few companies I've worked at have had automated nightly builds. 
Generally they'd pick a good dead-time (not midnight, since it happens 
to often be prime hacking time), do a CVS checkout and then fire off a 
build. If anything breaks, the scripts would look up the latest checkins 
and send mail to those listed. The first company I was at that did these 
was working under Paul Eggert.

That kind of thing helps catch problems early, when changes are still 
fresh in peoples minds and less 'expensive' to fix.
