AFAIK Latex uses its own font system while most modern programs, incl  
SodiPodi, use a system called fontconfig. With this, it is shamefully easy  
to add new fonts, at least TTF ones:
1. If it does not exist, create a directory named .fonts (note the leading  
dot) in your home directory
2. Find required TTF fonts (http://corefonts.sf.net is a good place to  
start)
3. Sodipodi _should_ see them now

AFAIK Helvetica == Arial in most regards

this is version 1.2 of GIMP, that does not yet use fontconfig, v 2 does :)
