problem opening sodipodi-created SVG file in Illustrator 9.0

When I opened it in Illustrator 9.0, the XML appears instead of the image. I ran across another post where someone turned their sodipodi objects into paths, saved the SVG file, and opened it successfully in Illustrator. That's fine if you don't need to edit the image, but how can I open the file in Illustrator and still modify the objects? Thank you for your help.
