Re: problem opening sodipodi-created SVG file in Illustrator 9.0

Try copying the image to the clipboard and then pasting it into AI. 
 
(Happily, though trained and fluent in several versions of many of their 
products, I don't own, support or use any Adobe products [aside from Reader so 
I'm not sure it'll work.) 
 
I could be wrong, but can't you just break apart/ungroup the image elements 
once it's imported through the method you mentioned and then edit it from 
there?
