The problem is the amount of network traffic generated by transferring 
low-level graphics from client to server.  The associated delays are also 
problematic.  It is much more elegant to let the server do the drawing.  This 
would also solve the problem of themes for every GUI toolkit and for every 
windowmanager, because all could move to using just Y themes.  Of course it 
is possible to make Y 100% backwards-compatible without sacrificing any of 
the elegance.

I'm just a bystander, so look carefully if anyone here will correct me.  If 
not, only then believe me.
