If we can return to the initial question for a moment: Y was created to solve three specific problems, two of which still exist - that it's a pain to program GUIs, and that it's a pain to deal with inconsistent GUIs. Now I'll grant that these two things are as hard as ever. But the important thing is that I don't have to deal with them on a day-to-day basis. I would do more if I was in the same situation as 2 years ago, having to write and test GUIs, but thankfully I'm not. This is a common problem with itch-scratch software, once a biggger itch comes along it no longer gets scratched. I suspect that getting to level n+1 in FF XI is a bigger itch for Mark than fixing Y at the moment. Anyway, I have a new digital camera arriving soon, so at some point I'll write some code to render the raw images from that to screen. This will probably involve writing the picture widget for Y (with resizing/resampling support), because I imagine the joy of low-level X programming hasn't increased sufficiently in the last 30 months.
