Phil and whoever else is still listening, I see two problems in the development process on this project. One is that the "core" team rarely communicates, and when they do, it is often to tell the person requesting information to leave them alone. Mark seemed, at one time, to want this to be an open, evolving project: "Now is probably as good a time as any to get started on developing Y. Come and join me!" - y-windows.org front page That attitude seems to have died off somewhere. The second is the apparent lack of interest from the "core" team. The latest patch I can find in Mark's archive in was from July. And Phil's email seems to indicate that that won't change for a while. This insular, non-communicative process has effectively made Y a toy for Mark and his friends, and no one else. Which is fine, if that is what Mark wants it to be. It is his project, after all, not ours. If the situation bothers you(you being someone other than Mark & Co.), fork it.
