Although I don't see much progress with this project lately, those complaining about it must realize that Mark's, Andrew's, Phil's and any other developers who are participating choose to volunteer their time to work on it, and they have every right to choose if they want to spend their time on it. A lot of vitality came from people interested in the eye candy Y initially made available, but then Keith's Kdrive server and later X.Org 6.8 introduced support for translucency on a platform that everyone had and used. That most certainly helped cause the current incubation of Y. There's also the fact that if people want something done, the open source philosophy is: do it yourself. I'm very much aware that many complainees don't have the technical skill or whatever, but the solution then if they want to help is to bring interested developers _here_. And I don't ever want to see a complainee quote "being too busy" as a reason they aren't helping themselves. Because *real* developers are allowed to be busy too.
