Familiar Linux and HARD-RESET (on old iPAQ 3630)

Hello, 

I want to replace the weak battery of my iPAQ 3630,
where I've installed Familiar 0.8.4.

I read some "Do It Yourself" and other "How-to", that
STRONGLY recommend to do an HARD-RESET of the iPAQ
before the beginning of this operation.

( An hard reset is when the switch behind the door on
the bottom left of the iPAQ is thrown ) 
HARD-RESET :

"When thrown back on, the iPAQ will have lost all
installed software and revert to its original factory
configuration "


==> If I do this hard-reset, will I have to install
again all the Familiar 0.8.4 in the Flash-ROM ?

==> Did someone replace the battery of an LINUX-iPAQ
series 3630/3760 ? 
How did you exactly do for having no loss of data /
linux system ?
