new install - memory cleanup issues

iPAQ 3950 Familiar 0.8.4 Opie 1.2.1
Hello....A fresh install to the handheld was successful. 3950 has run out of root memory...therefore a FamiliarSlimDown is required .
A few questions :
1. keyed passwd in console but error message received. Is su required to open remove packages or edit conf files?
2. tried to edit ..../etc/ipkg.conf in vi and text editor but save was not successful..denied. How can the file be saved?
3. Tried removing bluetooth using both package manager and console ipkg without success. Selected force options in both scenerios. Any suggestions?
