I had this problem while doing a h3900/PPC upgrade a long time ago. Sorry I don't remember the details. But I *think* I finally got around it by using a docking station with a serial connection instead of a USB one. Doesn't help if you don't have a serial cable, but if you have one you could try that... A bit slower than USB but you do it only once so it does not matter.
