Hey! Being the owner of an iPaq h5550 I have to say it works like a charm running linux. The only thing is I was not able to get it working with Haret. But I installed it via the serial port and the things you mentioned work. (Well, I don't really know if Java is supported, but I guess...) I have been thinking about an Hp Ipaq 5500 series model but it seems very old, from 2004 or so.
