The IPAQ 55xx is very nice. I have one and have tried both OPIE and
GPE on it. Both are ok, but I prefer OPIE, which is strange since I
use nothing but GNOME on my home computers. OPIE is just more
polished. And there seems to be more software available. My h5550
works fine with Linux, and it does have wifi and SD
support. The only potential problem with the SD card support is that I
found you can only use SD cards up to a certain size. I believe the
limit is 1GB. The h5550 is older, but it was really ahead of it's time
in that it is loaded with features like a fingerprint scanner, large
screen, and a nice big rom and ram allocation. So, for an older PDA,
imo it still holds it's own. It is up to you if you want to go with a
newer PDA, but you will most assuredly have more bugs to work out. The
learning curve with Linux is pretty steep. The learning curve when it
comes to putting Linux on a PDA is even steeper, even one that is
already well supported. Unless you are a good programmer and very
dedicated, you probably don't want to get too cutting edge with
the hardware. Of course, you could get a Commercially-sold Linux PDA.
But that would be pricey. Of course, I haven't owned any of the newer
PDAs that can be flashed with Linux, so I don't have any firsthand
experience as to what problems you will run into. They may work just
fine. However, I personally wouldn't even think about it. I like
having a PDA that actually works. I'm actually thinking about selling
my h5550 and getting a 38-39xx series IPAQ. Since the serial
networking works so well, I don't really need the wireless...

Hello,

I am searching a PDA that matches these requirements:
- I can install Java on it
- I can install Linux on it
- Wifi support
- SD slot
- I can use Wifi from Linux
- I can use the SD from Linux

Any advice? I have been thinking about an Hp Ipaq 5500 series model but
it seems very old, from 2004 or so. Should I buy a newer one (which can
maybe give me more problems with linux) or is it ok with Hp Ipaq 5500 ?
