Starting from scratch, with a J720

I recently decided to buy myself a handheld PC; my criteria were that
it could access wireless internet, view Wikipedia, connect securely to
GMail, and edit and savesmall text files. I decided on an HP Jornada
720 with a Lucent 802.11b Wireless Network card (WaveLAN silver) and a
256 Mb flashcard (but no flash-board), which should arrive ~Fri-Sat.

I'd be quite happy if I were able to run Linux instead of WinCE - but
I'm having a bit of trouble trying to page through and understand the
various docs and FAQs.

First, I'd like to make sure that the software I download actually
works with the hardware I have, and that it's capable of doing what I
want it to do - I know that some versions of Familiar aren't
compatible, but which ones? Should I try JLime instead, or some other
OS-package?

Second, what would I actually need to download and do to have
everything ready for when the actual machine arrives?

Third, any suggestions on what else I might try doing with the
Jornada, just because I can? :)
