Otto:

The idea of tearing the innards of a CF card out of its case did occur
to me. The problems I found with that idea were two-fold:

1. Without its case and connector, the CF card wouldn't fit back into
a card reader, pcmcia carrier, or a CF slot for reprogramming. (one of
the issues I am attempting to solve is not only the initial programming,
but also undoing subsequent "botched" programming).

2. The CF board still takes up too much space - there's no room for
TSOP-style RAM. However, with BGA RAM, it might work (my initial
research for the stripped-CF idea only focused on TSOP RAM as BGA RAM
wasn't yet available).

I'll look again at the stripped-CF idea with an eye towards using BGA
RAM - however, the stripped CF *must* retain its connector to solve
problem #1 above.
