run a memory profiler on miniapm?
reinstall matchbox + miniapm in order to make sure they're the newest?

That's some virtual number. Doesn't mean it consumes that much RAM.
But it's high, nevertheless.

Well, what do you think the kernel should do? There is no more memory,
you can't wait and hope the problem goes away, so you have to kill SOME
process. There is some heuristic in the kernel for that, aimed at killing
processes that are requesting memory, iirc.
It may well be that's a bad heuristic for PDAs (it should kill miniapm for
you, I'd say).
