That's a very great shame. I couldn't agree more strongly with Arieh's 
comment:

I'd go further to say that for project/s of this scale, it is as 
important as the existence of the developer group. Without it I believe 
progress will be dramatically hindered possibly ultimately fatally.

Debian does indeed seem a perfect example of how to handle this issue 
from the user's perspective. It is sad the Egos you refer to aren't able 
to learn by such example.
