I want to share some thoughts about future of OpenZaurus with rest of
developers.
Currently we have 3 releases in use:
- 3.5.4 on collie/2.4, poodle/2.4, tosa/2.4
- 3.5.4.1 on clamshells
- 3.5.4.2 on poodle/2.6, tosa/2.6
And then we have Hentges builds for some of models.
Idea of making OZ 3.5.5 release for all models comes from time to time. It
would be collie/2.4, rest/2.6 because it works and we does not want to
support 2.4 kernels on other models then collie.
What do we need for it?
- minimal images for collie, poodle, tosa, c7x0 (14-23M flash for use)
- normal images for poodle, tosa, c7x0, akita, spitz
- big images for spitz
Collie, poodle, tosa, c7x0 can get possibility to boot from SD (via altboot
on collie, direct on other) to get rid of small flash size problems.
All 2.6 models can get 2.6.17+ (maybe even 2.6.19) kernel but we need to
get rid of hostap bug first - does someone tried LKML with it?
What to change in .oz354x before release:
- qt/e with Japanese support
- opie 1.2.2 (bluetooth updates)
- wpa-supplicant 0.5.5 (gnutls)
- latest gnutls (security)
- newer udev
- dbus 1.0
- gpe updates
This part will take week or two to get it sorted. Then building images and
start of betatest program like it was with 3.5.4/3.5.4.1 when we got over
hundred of testers.
The problem is that in same time we will work on getting Angstrom released
for same machines so I do not know how to handle this. From one side it
can give us stable OpenZaurus release for all Zaurus models but from
second it will fragment users as some of them will go Angstrom, some
OpenZaurus.
Adding new software into OpenZaurus after 3.5.5 release will be limited -
most of developer time will rather go into improving Angstrom.
