Wasn't 3.5.4.1 supposed to run 2.6? Or is that only on the clamshell

Could be, since opie-reader reacts a bit weird to the cancel button.
Just press it a few times, and you switch between the list of books
and the last book you read. I'd expect it to close the book and return
to the list of books (first press) and then close opie-reader all
together (second press).
