recipes, configurations, and kernels; getting control....

I have a system set up where I can 'bitbake opie-image' and 'bitbake
virtual/kernel' and it seems to be running to completion and building
things.

I'm trying to understand how and why all of the recipes work the way
that they do, and would be interested in debugging/understanding
tips.

My immediate problem is that it's building the 2.4 embeddix kernel,
even though I have KERNEL=2.6 in my build/conf/local.conf file.  I've
tried setting/overriding various variables in
org.openembedded.oz354x/conf/{,distro,machine} to no avail.

I thought that the 3.5.4 release used the 2.6 kernel on the tosa, so I
kind of expected that it would be the default.

Anyway, I've tried 'bitbake -s -v -D virtual/kernel' to try to get a
handle on what's happening, and that's interesting in that it shows me
the conf files that are being used and the order in which they're
being read.

Are there other tricks that I could be using?

In this particular case, what do I need to set to get the 2.6 kernel
to build?
