Just to contribute my 2c to the discussion: I have maintained a subscribers-only ML for months - never more, it's a nightmare, so unless there is a crazy volunteer I'd say that subscribers-only is not an option. Anyway, I don't see much spam on this list, is it possible that it gets filtered before going into the digest? So I would suggest the original complainer to try digest mode, it should really help - unless, of course, you are eager to read messages as soon as possible...
