You should be able to run your system from the storage card - although there
are some provisos...

It appears that there are some cards that work and some that don't - I don't
think there's a list set up at the moment, however, one of the developers is
creating a program which runs on the ipaq and gets the diagnostic
information that the developers need to adjust the system to work on the
card - initial versions of the program should be available in the next
couple of weeks.

For example, I'm running from a compact flash on my HP 2210, however, I've
got to use a 128Mb card, because my main 512Mb card won't run...

You need access to a linux PC (possibly using a 'live' CD) - because you
need to re-partition your card into a 5Mb FAT partition and the rest as a
linux ext2 partition - once thats done, you copy the necessary files onto
the two partitions.

Once the whole thing runs (by 'clicking' on a windows pocket PC program that
is one of the files on the 5Mb fat partition), it wipes out the memory of
the ipaq, and installs linux - your ROM is unaffected. However, if you
reboot / exit - it is just as if you've done a cold reset - all your data
from the iPaq's memory is erased (diary,contacts etc).

I don't know what the support is like for the 3870, however the guys on the
2210 list are very responsive - I'm assuming that the images for the 2210
won't be compatible with the 3870 - but you could ask....
