Ok, that's what I was afraid of. I am not afraid of coding, but it isn't 
really worth the time investment for me.

I didn't have to change Opie itself. The only change I made was hardcoding 
that the device is a PalmTE because for some reason it didn't recognise that.

The real challenge was making the Kernel boot, and getting the hardware to 
work. Anything newer than 2.6.19-omap1 failed to initialize the SD card for 
some reason. 2.6.19-omap1 itself suffers from random segfaults in user mode 
apps, it seems that the CPU cache isn't set up properly. 2.6.17-omap* can't 
use my 2 GB SD card. So in the end I am stuck with 2.6.16-omap1 + a bunch of 
patches I found via google or "backported" from later kernels. So far almost 
everything is working. Sound is mono only at 22.050 khz with ugly cracking, 
and battery uptime is bad, but I can open an ssh tunnel and read my mail, 
which I couldn't do in PalmOS. If anyone else has Linux running on a PalmTE 
I'd be happy to hear about your experience.

On the userland side, for some reason no root image I found worked. For some 
reason every kernel I tried froze when it was supposed to start /sbin/init, 
so I cross-compiled everything from scratch(LFS, sorta).

In case anyone is interested in all this, send me an email. When I have time 
I'll upload the patches somewhere. In the end however, I figured that the 
whole work was a waste of time and I'd have been better off if I just bought 
a new PDA, but now that it is working and I can do the things I originally 
wanted to do I'll keep using my PalmTE.
