GCal sharing, and irregular repeats

Sorry to deal with multiiple topics in one message if that's an issue here:

Dates like this that are "mostly but not always regularly repeating",
I set up by creating the standard repeating event, then going in an
making exceptions then moving those outliers manually.

"This holiday observed on a Monday because it fell on a weekend" = two
separate entries for me, one the regularly repeating one, which I
leave in place, and another manually created (maybe irregular repeat)
one I label "Holidayname Observed".

I would think (and hope) that CESD wouldn't tie into any one
proprietary service - I see Gcal as an "output medium" to be published
TO from my local "master data". This sort of interoperability is IMO
currently best served by the "icalendar" (ICS/ical) format standard,
which Google supports well, and many calendar services will display
free/busy times without revealing details except to those specifically
allowed access - this is a standard groupware feature from 20+ years
back.

(OT sidenote) In answer to the question "why don't mainstream apps
support advanced calendaring features" the obvious answer is that they
are only important to a relatively small segment of the market. I
think what these vendors don't realize is HOW important they are to
people like us, in that if they aren't available we probably won't
move to that platform to handle our calendaring, no matter how cool or
trendy it may be in all other respects.

In case it is of interest to anyone (including future googlers) here's
some of my "standing dates" process.

I maintain my own ical files using Mozilla's Sunbird - one I've
modified from a published "US Holidays", one for personally meaningful
annual dates (birthdays/anniversaries etc) and a "Thai dates" as I'm
living in Bangkok these days. When I update these, usually 3-5 years
in advance I wipe out my "imported from ical" category in DateBk and
then re-import the new versions in - most recently using Airset to
sync via Palm Desktop. Because I keep the DB (and in my case
LifeBalance) note tagging strings in the source ICS file, all my icons
and categories are preserved.


And finally, another "me too please hurry!" on an Android Pimlical,
I've got a half-dozen spares of my no-longer-manufactured PalmOS
smartphone, but the batteries are getting increasingly hard to replace
here. . .
