As you requested, I'll clarify a few things.

Laptops, both Windows and Mac, have been very "usable" for quite some time now without being plugged in.  I've used Dell and Lenovo laptops that had fast processors, extended primary batteries, and modular optical bay batteries that provided long battery life.  On the Mac side, the newer MacBook Pros offer as much as 10 hours of battery life (actual results may vary).

You ask what I "mean by the statement that running Windows in a virtual environment solely for Pimlical amounts to "overkill"?"

What I mean by that is that Pimlical is a Java-based program.  It can run that way directly on the Mac, because Java is cross platform.  To run Windows (a whole operating system) in order to run Pimlical in a Windows Java implementation, is running a whole lot more than would be needed by purely running Pimlical directly on a Mac.

Running Windows on the Mac is remarkably fast, but it does add about 5% or more to CPU resources (my best guess based on looking at the activity monitor).  It might double the CPU resources of a Mac that isn't doing much (like word processing), in that a Mac not doing much might show maybe 3% of CPU being used during light tasks, but when VMWare Fusion, which is similar to Parallels), is running it might show 6% of CPU resources.  Of course when doing something processor intensive on either Mac or virtual Windows, CPU will be higher.  Both VMWare Fusion and Parallels increase their efficiency with every new release.  The only other program that I still run in Windows that I haven't found an equal or superior product to is Quicken, but with that I can stop and start Windows.  With a calenda
 r / task app like Pimlical though I like to have it open all the time and to run Windows all the time just to run Pimlical doesn't seem worth it to me, even though I LOVE floating events and have never found anything nearly as good as DateBK6.

I did just buy a MacBook Air with 256GB SSD drive and wow, what a difference SSD makes -- everything seems to run much faster, and it's only 2.6 pounds.
