That's probably more trouble than it's worth and, as you noted, it would alter records from the past.  It's not that big of a deal for me, but it is something that I have wondered about for a long time.

I wonder if you go back to the very first occurrence of the repeated 
event and change the repeat
particulars there whether the problem goes away? This of course will 
change the dates/times of
all the following events, including the ones that have already passed - 
bad if you need an accurate
record of every scheduled event.
