Re:Getting ready to jump ship

I seriously debated this back in October.  I was carrying a Palm m505 (which I had NEVER liked compared to my other, older Palms), a Blackberry (for work email only), an iPod (for music only) and a Sprint phone (for phone only).  The options, as I saw them:  a) upgrade to a Treo 755 to combine phone/Palm function; b) upgrade to a Blackberry for phone/email/some of what had been Palm, c) upgrade to an iPhone (and hope that enough of the Palm function could meld that).

The problem with Blackberry, for me, was that a) I couldn't organize the memos the way I wanted to -- they all go into one bucket, and you can't create separate categories to distinguish them -- so my recipes would be running into my list of things to buy and so forth.  (I'm a BIG user of memos.)  The contacts and calendar would have been a pain to move over, but I could have done it.  The other hesitation against Blackberry was a program that I have long had installed on my Palm and loved -- Vindigo.  Of course, they went defunct in January, so it isn't worth mentioning them further, but man that stinks.  So THAT's why I didn't delve further into the Blackberry world.

The iPhone was also a big possibility for me, but everyone I spoke to said that the iPhone dropped all their calls -- and I actually use my phone for talking, so that wasn't a good thing.  Plus, I've had problems with previous iPods just totally dying on me -- one day they work, the next they don't.  

So I got a Treo.  I like it a lot -- it has a keyboard and a stylus, but I almost never use the stylus.  I like that I can touch the screen to delete things, although it sometimes interferes when I'm talking to someone.  My main problem with it is the fact when it merged my phone and my Palm, any contacts that were in both got duplicated, and the fact that it seems bent on giving any NEW contacts what it considers to be the default ring -- which is the one that I had always used for my VIP-run-to-the-phone-asap ring.  (Fur Elise.)  (And Palm.com's help desk was completely and totally unhelpful with regard to that.)

So... I don't know.  I feel like iPhone is the wave of the future, but not sure how they are for managing memos/emails/contacts/calendars.  Whether you stay or go with Palm will depend on why you have liked the Palm and are now reticent to leave.  But I agree that Blackberry isn't necessarily the best option.
