Thanks for the info. I repaired it myself by replacing the screen with another screen I had from a bad 71.

I read online that the screen can become unresponsive because the battery swells and puts pressure on it. I didn't actually take the battery out. I took the screen away from the battery. This didn't fix my problem. I am mentioning it in case it helps someone else.

I got the battery and tools off of eBay for about $13.00. You can get it cheaper.

The instructions I got with the battery said there is more than one type of 71. Mine was the kind they recommended to have a technician do. This is not a good first project. I have done similar things but not on a PDA. It was very scary opening the Palm because some of the parts are glued down and must be pried off, such as the speaker. I was afraid I might break something.

I did not replace the battery yet because I wanted to sync again before I do it. I am also going to install BackupBuddy first. I have it on my old desktop computer but not the laptop.

One interesting thing.. my camera did not work before I started. When I had the Palm apart, I pressed the shutter button. The camera worked! I noticed when I put the Palm back together, that the charger was intermittent. I had to be careful in how I put it back together so that the charger would work. Now that it is put back together, the camera button doesn't work. (Someone once told me it is impossible to have a camera that does not work in a unit that will still charge.) I have not tried to see if it is possible to replace the ribbon cable. I can't remember if the camera worked in the bad Palm or not.
