The problem lies with 64 bit OS. I had to replace my wifes Palm E. As the replacement was shipping her laptop died. The new one has Win 7 Premium 64 bit. Of course it does not work. Here is what you have to do to get yourself running again.

You must be running either professional/enterprise or ultimate windows 7 64 bit. You can do an inplace upgrade via Microsoft at half the price of the box at best buy.

You then download the Virtual PC and XP Mode add-ons from Microsoft. Fortunately they lifted the hardware resistrictions and now it can run either on hardware or in software (slower but it works). This is free once you have the correct version of Win 7.

Launch and configure XP Mode (one time Virtual machine setup). Keep in mind this is another PC running inside of Win 7 so it needs its own firewall, antivirus, etc. comodo, avast, zonealarm all have decent free firewalls and antivirus software.

Install your palm desktop inside the xp machine.

When it comes time to hotsync you should notice on the bar at the top of the screen there is a dropdown menu that says USB. When you intiate the hotsync from your palm or the button on the cable you must take the mouse and click on the USB menu in there you will see the Palm Desktop choice click on it and your hot sync will fire off. You must do this every time. 

Fortunately you can print to your printers, access your drives and even cut and paste between Win7 and your XP mode machine so you can continue with your palm pilot until Android comes out with a decent replacement (or iTouch if you like closed systems), But at least you will have your data. You can then export out of the desktop, etc. Or as we are going to do just continue using it until a new PDA grabs our attention.

Oh BTW anything else you lost when you went 64 bit can be run in this XP mode as it is really XP. (Even have to do the windows update thing...) So it is worth it even for things that are not Palm but don't run in 64 bit OS.
