OK, some news to report:

This actually *does* look like it's to do with Memo32DB.

Hard reset and orderly installation and stability of minimal utils 
(NVBackup) caused no trouble.

Found v8.13 archives I actually *had* downloaded, and upgraded to them. 
  Installed corresponding v8.13 pToolSetPro as well.

Added a couple of lines to a particular memo, no problem.

Went to edit a particular memo I keep (log of mileage), which had the 
'ÿ' ('y' with an umlaut over it) char in a large block of text 
corrupting about 120 lines.  Deleted the lines successfully, but when I 
returned to ListView, got the message

"Free data space on the device is dangerously low - some data could not 
be saved."

At this point, none of the Memo32DB or MemoDB files can be found.

My particular fix will be to delete the offending memo from a backup 
copy, or export all memos and reimport individually.

I've let Paul know; not sure how/why this behaviour happens (not sure if 
it's related to SkyIsLimit, which might want to be on), but I think a 
big piece of the mystery is solved.
