Palm OS hacks are like TSRs in the way they operate. They patch into the interrupt chain, and replace standard OS functions with their own code. Palm hacks bypassed one early TSR annoyance. You may remember the good old days whern TSRs could step on each other's electronic toes by grabbing the same interrupts and not correctly passing control back uip the chain, so you had to experiment with the order in which TSRs were loaded, and perhaps forgo some entirely. Palm hacks require a hack maanger present to enable and configure them which handles such issues. A number exist. Palm OS 5 removed the OS function hacks used, so traditional hacks mostly don't work. They are replaced by "Notification Applications", which can receive and act upon messages from the Notification Manager. Tealpoint software has a hack manager that allows some old-style hacks to operate by intercepting the hack call and converting it to a notification. Unfortunately, not all of the things OS 4 hacks did *have* corresponding OS 5 notifications, so only some OS4 hacks can be run this way. (Tealpoint has a compatibility list of what works.) A Russian programmer named Igon Nesterov discovered you could write OS 5 hacks as native ARM code and run then through an undocumented interface, and released an OS 5 version of his Yet Another Hack Manager application. I use it to run an OS5 version of Fonthack and selectively replace Palm system fonts in applications.
