I have used a number of these over the years. I depend on outliners.
Progect has been the absolute best for a few reasons.
- It works fast on the Palm. No delays after your taps.
- The display is crisp with good icons. Motion seems to be intuitive. I
play with the trees in my files, rearranging to suit.
- The desktop companion, PDesk, is similarly well programmed, and its team
deserves kudos as well. Fast and good looking. The conduit works very well
(except for duplicating entries after a move) so it is a powerful action to
sync a progect from the palm to the desktop, work on it a while there,
then sync it back.
- With PDesk, I am fortunate in being able to export to text files and
import from text files. My progects have a lot of scope if I can move them
out into office software, let's say for a memo to be distributed.
- I am glad that the Progect pdb databases are really in not too
complicated a format. In a pinch, if the Palm has been misplaced, I have
simply grabbed a text editor (emacs) and looked through the hotsync's binary
copy of a progect. I can view the strings I've typed in, and they are in
order, so I can still skip down a progect tree just by viewing the binary.
ThoughtManager was also a good outliner.
LifeBalance ... I use it lots. It is not free, as someone pointed out.
Much more importantly, it is not an outliner, it is a life management tool
that has outlining capabilities. Very very recommended as a life management
tool.
