Shadow desktop closes on opening file

No changes in operating environment or Shadow Desktop (4.3.9). When I
click on File>Open (or the open icon), there is a brief (< 1 sec.)
flash of the file choosing dialog box and then the program terminates.
Tried, with no success: uninstall/reinstall, running from command
line, restored to a week ago.  Any ideas??
